Cleanliness promotes a good state of mind by keeping the body, brain, and soul healthy. Maintaining cleanliness is an integral part of healthy living as it is cleanliness that helps improve our lifestyles by keeping us clean from both outside and within. All individuals should keep themselves and their surroundings clean and hygienic. It enables the mind to develop positive thoughts and keeps health complications at bay. While launching the Swacch Bharat Mission at Rajpath in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "A clean India would be the best tribute India could pay to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary in 2019." On October 2, 2014, Swachh Bharat Mission was launched to attain the vision of a clean India.
Jain College - Hubli, in association with Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Regional Directorate of NSS - Bangalore, Karnatak University - Dharwad, and National Service Scheme, organized a seven-day university level Swachhata Camp from October 18 to October 24, 2019, at Jain College campus located in Hubli. The event aimed to bring awareness among the youth for the development of the country and honor the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
Day 1:
The camp began with the registration process where NSS volunteers from four different districts got themselves registered. Mr. Basavaraj G. Bangari - Director of Unic Dream Team IAS/KAS Coaching Center, was one of the prominent dignitaries to attend the event. He spoke about the role of coaching centers in nation-building. Dr. M. B. Dalpati, NSS Coordinator - Karnatak University, graced the event with his presence. The event witnessed the presence of Professor Maya Kulhalli, Principal of Jain College as the chairperson, and Dr. M. S. Hulgur, NSS Program Officer, 15 NSS Program Officer, and media coordinator, as the camp organizing secretary along with 150 volunteers. Teams were assigned committees with rules and regulations of the camp to make the event deliver quality results.
Day 2:
Day two of the camp started at 5:30 a.m. with flag hoisting. The chief guest for the event was Professor I. G. Sanadi, a former member of parliament. The team members actively took part in yoga and meditation. The day continued with various activities focusing on cleaning the campus and surrounding areas. A competition based on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was organized, which included debates, pick and speak competition, one-act play, essay writing, and theatre.
Mr. Pralhad Venktesh Joshi, Minister of the Parliamentary Affairs in the Central Cabinet under Prime Minister Modi, with additional portfolios of Mines and Coal, inaugurated the camp. The chief guest for the event was Mr. K. V. Khadri Narasimhaiah, Regional Director of NSS - Bangalore. The day included various cultural programs to encourage the volunteers.
Day 3:
The day witnessed a rally on plastic ban awareness from Jain Degree College to Rani Channamma Circle and back to college. During the rally, NSS volunteers showcased plastic bottle garlands, plastic masks, and street theatre while shouting plastic ban slogans throughout. The prominent guest, Dr. S. B. Nyamati, NSS Nodal Officer - Dharwad, addressed the volunteers on the role of NSS volunteers in nation-building. Dr. S. A. Kolur from Karnataka Arts College - Dharwad spoke on water conservation and the protection of mother nature.
Day 4:
On the fourth day, KIMS Hospital Cleaning Program took place, followed by an awareness rally on the importance of the plastic ban on hospital premises. The role of industries in maintaining sanitation, water conservation, and nature protection were the key highlights of the day to inspire the volunteers to take utmost responsibility for their environment and surroundings.
Day 5:
On day five, a seminar on Swachh Bharat was organized. The prominent personalities to attend and address the event were Mr. Mallikarjun Balikai - Ayurveda Doctor and Orator, Dr. L. D. Horakeri - Principal of K.L.E. Society's Shri Kadasiddheshwar Arts College and H.S. Kotambri Science Institute, Dr. Rajshekhar Bashetti - Ayurveda Doctor, Dr. L. R. Angadi -President of Zilla Sahitya Parishat, Ms. Nayana K.S. - Environmental Engineer, Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, and Mr. Mallikarjun B.M. -Environmental Engineer, Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation.
Day 6:
On day six, the volunteers carried out a drive to clean Unakal Lake. Dr. M. B. Dalpatigraced the event with his presence and announced the commencement of the cleaning drive. The cleaning of the lake was followed by an awareness rally at the Unakal village.
A one-day workshop on Pradhan Mantri Scheme and Swachh Bharat took place. The workshop included three sessions. During the first session Professor K. S. Koujalagi -Retired Professor, and Dr. Jayanand Hatti,NSS Program Officer - GFGC Kalaghatagi, spoke on the contributions of Rani Kittur Channammaji. In the second session, P.M. Schemes and Swachh Bharat Mission were shed light upon by Mr. Mallikarjun Patil, Additional Private Secretary to Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines, Government of India, and Mr. Sharnu Angadi,a former member of Administration Association - Dharwad. The third session witnessed discussions on the role of media in Swachh Bharat by Dr. Bandu Kulkarani,Resident Editor of Vijay Karnataka - Hubli, Dr. Prabhakar Kamble, Assistant Professor, Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Karnatak Arts College - Dharwad, Mr. Akshay Kumar Joshi,HOD - Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, SJMVS Arts and Commerce College for Women - Hubli, and Mr. Mallikarjun Siddanavar,Resident Editor of Kannada Prabha - Hubli.
Day 7:
The last day of the camp had a valedictory program. The chief guest Professor N. M. Sali, Registrar (Evaluation), Karnatak University - Dharwad, the guest of honor, Mr. Suresh Itnal, KAS Commissioner Hubli - Dharwad Municipal Corporation, Mr. K. V. Khadri Narsimhaiah, Regional Director, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Regional Directorate of NSS Government of India - Bangalore, Professor Maya Kulhalli, Dr. M. B. Dalpati, Dr. M. S. Hulgur, and 150 Volunteers were part of the event.
The camp was a grand success with the support of Dr. N. M. Sangammanavar, Dr. Mahesh Horakeri, Dr. S. A. Kolur, Professor Lata Killedar, Professor Shivakumar Hiremath, Professor Pampapati Idagal, Professor V. S. Kattimath, the management and staff of Jain College - Hubli.
